Having moved into an old cottage a couple of years ago the time came to deal with the vile smelling 30mx30mx5m natural pond!

Said pond had just about every type of algae you could possibly imagine and as an added bonus had a faulty septic tank discharging untreated liquid into it for 5 years previously. It doesn't take much imagination to visualise this green, stinking nightmare.

Anyway, we replaced the septic tank, cleared the algae manually from a dinghy and then with great scepticism but the barley straw boom across the pond. Unbelievably 2 months later the pond was clear. The problem now was to keep it clear, enter DyoFix Pond Blue.

Having been around for several decades and bought umpteen products that promise the earth and deliver nothing I chucked the appropriate quantity of concentrate into the pond and looked forward to the return of the duckweed and algae. Guess what, this product really does work, the pond looks absolutely brilliant, clean, clear, slightly blue and has nothing growing on it apart from ducks and moorhens!

Fantastic product would seriously recommend it and will be purchasing some more shortly. Just as an added bonus the staff are friendly and helpful, another rarity these days. The only drawback and this was my fault, was not keeping the dog out of the way when dispensing the concentrate and so had a slightly blue Labrador for a couple of days until we took him to the seaside!

In sixty years I have never written this sort of letter to any company so you can see how pleased I am with the product.
Best regards, Chris Matthews

It's bright, it's blue, and it could be coming to a venue near you this summer. A radical dye, which is being heralded as a miracle cure for excessive weed growth and fish-killing algal blooms, is set to become an increasingly common sight at commercial carp and mixed species fisheries. Imminent ban spells end of chemical usage in ponds and lakes.

Food dye-based product offers non-toxic and environmentally-friendly alternative.

Dichlobenil, the last remaining biocide used to control rooted submerged plants, will be withdrawn on 18 March 2010 to comply with EU directives. With it, the range of products available to local authorities and others charged with the upkeep and maintenance of ponds and lakes will be more limited than ever before.

One of the few non-toxic and environmentally friendly products available is Dyofix, an algae prevention and inhibitor product which uses blends of European Food Safety Approved colours. It works by reflecting UV light away from the base of the pond, effectively eliminating the life source of nutrients present beneath the surface of the water and stopping the growth of submerged weeds and algae.

The imminent Dichlobenil ban comes as research by the charity Pond Conservation found that 80% of Britain's ponds are in a "poor" or "very poor" state, and their condition has deteriorated markedly since 1996.

Peter Watson, Director of Town End (Leeds) PLC who manufacture Dyofix, said: "This ban officially marks the end of chemical use in ponds and lakes, and our products offer an environmentally-friendly and chemical-free alternative to an unsightly and often hazardous problem. Not only can algae pose health risks to humans, aquatic animals and livestock, it is unsightly, reduces water clarity and blocks filters and pumps."

He went on to say. "Our inhibitors don't kill algae, but they do prevent growth, allowing the algae to either sink or be scooped off the surface of the pond."

The Dyofix product range - Pond Blue and Lake Shadow - are completely free of pesticides, algaecides and other harmful chemicals. They don't have a chemical reaction or interaction to attack submerged plants and/or algae; instead they have a mechanical reaction with the water to create a UV reflector, and so don't pose any threat to humans, animals, fish or pond life.

Dyofix Pond Blue can be used by local authorities, golf clubs and owners of commercial fishing lakes to prevent the growth of algae and submerged plants and colour the lake or pond an appealing blue colour. One kilo of Pond Blue will treat up to 10,000,000 litres of pond water.

Dyofix Lake Shadow offers the same benefits as Pond Blue and has been developed for customers who require a more subtle colourless effect in their lake or pond.

Once applied, both products will last for several months, and can be used all year round.

DyoFix Lake Shadow

Some of our clients have fears of creating a "blue lake" through the possibility of using too much blue dye through over-dosing, we agree it is a possibility. To overcome this concern, we have developed DyoFix Lake Shadow, this dye builds an artificial shadow stopping UV light from feeding algae.

You can read all about this product in our DyoFix Lake Shadow page.

DyoFix Lake Shadow is available in powder form and is designed for large ponds and lakes. It is supplied in 5Kg packs, each containing 5 x 1Kg water soluble bags, each capable of treating 3.5 million litres, approximately 4 acres at a depth of 4 feet.

Saving costs for Irish golf courses

We are please to announce that a proprietor of one of Ireland's biggest amenity companies is having tremendous success using DyoFix products throughout the Country. He has established the use of DyoFix Pond Blue and both the Green and Blue Spray Pattern Indicators recently added to the DyoFix range of products.

"We have been using other Spray Pattern Indicators for many years" a spokesman said, "and we have found the DyoFix Products are up to 4 times stronger than the others, and over a full season the savings will be vast. Not only that, we no longer need a giant warehouse to keep our stock in as we only need a quarter of the space we needed before"

The Company had no experience of the DyoFix Pond Blue as an algae inhibitor before, but they now have several Golf course lakes treated and the benefits are already obvious. "Not only does the water take on a subtle hint of Blue but the thought of not having to skim off all that green stuff is a real boon. At a cost of €25 per acre of water, it's probably the most economical form of algae suppression we have ever come across".

Blue fountain of water could save lives of fish

Woodland View near Droitwich

If this was the scene at your local commercial fishery, you'd probably gasp in horror, but this blue fountain of water could save the lives of thousands of fish this summer. One of Britain's most popular match circuit waters - Woodland View near Droitwich in Worcestershire - has dyed all of its lakes blue with a harmless solution that helps protect valuable stocks by stopping the oxygenation-sapping algal blooms that can lead to devastating fish kills.

The fishery has been using 'Dyofix', which reflects ultra violet rays from the sun, for the past two years, and is now advising every commercial lake owner to do the same ahead of the predicted summer heat wave. "There is no doubt in my mind that if I hadn't used 'Dyofix' in the blistering heat last year I would have lost fish due to algal blooms and de-oxygenation, just like many other fisheries did," said Mike Mason, owner of Woodland View.

"The dye is totally harmless and inexpensive. One of my lakes, which is about 1 acre in size, costs around £200 to treat, so even small fisheries can afford to safeguard their stocks." Leeds-based company Town End PLC, which produces Dyofix, claims the product not only prevents the growth of algae, but can also help protect stocks from cormorant predation due to the lower visibility in the water. Furthermore, the cloudy water has also helped boost anglers' catch rates at Woodlands View by making the fish feed with more confidence, especially in the colder months.

"The fish are really confident and now come and feed right in the margin, even in the winter when they're usually shy. It truly is a godsend," Mike Mason added.
